The latest Korean skin care trend this summer revolves around Korean toner, and it’s called the 7 Skin Method (which is great for all skin types). Before we get into how to do the 7 Skin Method, you need to know how important toner is.
The Korean word for toner is 피부, or “pi-bu” or “skin”. In that sense, toner is a very important step in Korean skin care. Toner is applied generously and in a few different ways like with a cotton face pad, patted into the skin with your hands, or you can use toner in the 7 Skin Method too.

What’s the 7 Skin Method?
What it is: applying toner in 7 layers, allowing it to absorb deeply into your skin.
When to do it: daily, every other day, after stressful skin situations – travel, flying, stress.
What to do next: apply your serum or lock it in with a moisturizer.
What the 7 Skin Method Does to Your Skin
- Adds firmness
- Adds bounce
- Improves the look of your skin over time
- Gives you glowing, healthy skin
What happens when you apply 7 layers of toner?
The 7 Skin Method trend calls for you to use toner or a toner + essence combination 3-7 times immediately after cleansing. The 2-7 times after the first application are stacking the moisture from the toner and absorbing it into skin.
Of course, you need to find the right toner (stay away from alcohol and dyes and perfumes) and choose something that won’t irritate your skin too much when you’re layering. And try to stick to really watery toners, and not thick ones that will be way too heavy and sticky after you apply your layers.
So, what happens? First, your skin will be completely hydrated. If you do this trend on a daily basis, your skin will look and feel amazing. The number one Korean beauty secret – and the purpose of all the products in Korean skin care is to add moisture. Have you noticed? That’s because moisture will give you skin that looks and feels healthy, giving you that Korean Glow.
What if I have oily skin?
The 7 Skin Method is also great for oily skin because your skin actually craves moisture – it’s the only way to stop the excess sebum production! Get an alcohol free and gentle toner. Stay away from toners with strong chemicals for oil or acne (sebum control is fine, though), we’re just trying to add moisture to your skin. Instead of adding a serum or moisturizer after the 7 Skin Method, just leave your skin alone and don’t add anything extra to it, except the necessary stuff like sunblock. You’ll be doing this once a week or every other day, so you’re fine to skip the extra treatments for this. If you need to use another product, go lighter on the layers and only do it 3 times or so. Find the balance for your skin and see how much it can handle.
How to do the 7 Skin Method
Try building up your layers so that you can judge how much of the layering your skin can handle. Try 3 layers at first and then build up from there.
- Cleanse your face – try a mild cleanser like Cremorlab Essence Tonic.
- You can pat your face dry or let it air dry. Leave your skin a little damp so that the toner penetrates your skin more.
- Press the toner in with your hands to warm (about a dime sized amount). I suggest you always apply the layers with your hands. You can use a pad but wiping your face over and over is irritating to your skin. Use a sweeping motion that moves up and out from your nose.
- Pat in the second layer with your hands.
What to do after applying the Toner
You can lock everything in with moisturizer or just apply serum (your face will be ready to absorb the most beneficial products after this treatment).
